Pemberton's world-famous soda was "created in Columbus, Georgia, and carried to Atlanta".[20] With public concern regarding dependency, depression, and alcoholism among war veterans, and "neurasthenia" among "highly-strung" Southern girls,[21] Pemberton's "medicine" was publicized as significantly useful for "ladies, and every one those whose inactive employment causes nervous prostration".[22]

In 1886, once Atlanta and artificer County enacted temperance legislation, Pemberton had to supply a non-alcoholic different from his French Wine Coca.[23] Pemberton relied on Atlanta store owner-proprietor Willis E. Venable to check, and facilitate him good, the instruction for the foodthat he developed by trial and error. With Venable's help, Pemberton found out a collection of directions for its preparation.

He merging the bottom sweetening with seltzer by chance once making an attempt to create another containerful of the food. Pemberton determined then to sell this as a fountain drink instead of drugs. Frank Mason Robinson came up with the name "Coca-Cola" for the rhyming sound, that was standard among alternative wine medicines of the time. though the name refers to the 2 main ingredients, attributable to conflict over its cocaine content, The Coca-Cola The company later aforementioned that the name was "meaningless however fanciful"
